Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools &
Chevy Host Music Sessions for Local Youth
At the ‘08 ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL

At this year’s Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, Chevrolet is once again showcasing its support of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools® through the sponsorship of a music therapy program.

The emotional connection with CDF last year thrust an ongoing relationship between Chevrolet and the CDF Freedom Schools that goes beyond financial backing.  This year the CDF Freedom Schools include 136 sites spanning 62 cities in 25 states, and serves more than 9,200 children across the U.S.

At the Essence Music Festival, the New Orleans chapter got together outside the Louisiana Superdome to demonstrate a Harambee! session, which is designed to get everyone excited and ready to start the day. The emotional music program is designed to educate and empower local Gulf area youth through the power of music.

The CDF was started in 1973 by Marian Wright Edelman in order to serve as a voice for all children, especially those from underserved areas. The Children's Defense Fund Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. The CDF Freedom Schools® began in 1992 and contribute CDF’s mission by providing academic enrichment during the summer, to give underserved children an opportunity to raise the bar and further their education.

In New Orleans this week, various student leaders and professionals who are devoting their summer to contribute to CDF’s efforts are offering demonstrations and workshops for the local kids in need and using the power of music to heal.
