LIVESTRONG and the Austin Marathon are in the running... together!
Austin, Texas, June, 2010— LIVESTRONG and the Austin Marathon are in the running... together! LIVESTRONG, an Austin based organization founded by champion cyclist Lance Armstrong which fights to improve the lives of people affected by cancer, announced a three-year title sponsorship of the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon. In press conference at its East Austin headquarters, Mayor Lee Leffingwell, LIVESTRONG President and CEO Doug Ulman, and Marathon Race Director John Conley noted that the new "locally grown and globally known" partnership will serve to empower more people affected by cancer, and encourage healthy lifestyles and sustainable living practices that will change lives for the better. The 2011 race, which will be held on February 20, 2011, marks the 20th Anniversary of the Austin Marathon. In celebration of this historic landmark, the 2011 LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon will host 20,000 runners - an increase from the usual number of 15,000 marathoners. Since its inception in 1992, the Austin Marathon has generated more than $90 million for the local economy and $6 million for Austin non-profits. In its twenty year history, 130,000 runners from 50 states and over 40 nations have crossed the finish line. The Austin Marathon is the 23rd largest marathon in the United States. Registration for the event - which includes a marathon (26.2 miles) and a half marathon (13.1 miles) is now open at www.youraustinmarathon.com. In addition to being the title sponsor, LIVESTRONG will participate in the marathon with a group of committed individuals who have raised funds for the fight against cancer. This year, Team LIVESTRONG will participate in more than two-dozen athletic events across the globe to raise $13 million in the fight against cancer. To register and learn more about Team LIVESTRONG viewers can visit www.LIVESTRONG.org. The LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon race director presented Mayor Leffingwell with an honorary jersey. For twenty years, the world-class Austin Marathon has united the community, brought national attention to the region, and continues to promote health and fitness and serves as a fundraising engine to both local and national charities through 26 Miles for 26 Charities - a program which directly connects the central Texas non-profit community to the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon through support of its 26 waters stops and creates a platform to generate public awareness. LIVESTRONG was founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong. LIVESTRONG fights for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer by connecting individuals to the support they need, leveraging funding and resources to spur innovation and engages communities and leaders to drive social change. |
