September 2011 New York, New York: The world now has a universal logo for human rights!

At a historic gala event in New York City, an international committee of diplomats, leaders, activists, and celebrities unveiled the design of Predrag Stakic, a 32 year-old a freelance graphic designer from Belgrade, Serbia as the official universal logo for human rights.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE CHOOSES DESIGN "BY THE PEOPLE - FOR THE PEOPLE"

The Logo for Human Rights emerged from an online competition and voting process that began with more than 15,300 logo designs submitted by participants from more than 190 countries. After an initial online vote that narrowed the field to 100 logos, an international jury narrowed the field to 10 finalists.
Designed "by the people and for the people" - the best logo was selected based on its simplicity, its ability to be instantly recognized, and its reproductibility in color, black-and-white, and in various sizes.

Members of the Jury include Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Aung San Suu Kyi, Jimmy Carter, Muhammed Yunus, Mikhail Gorbachev and Shirin Ebadi, as well as Chinese artist AI Weiwei, Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, Colombian musician Juanes and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanathem Pillay.
Among the supporters of the Logo for Human Rights include actress Kirsten Dunst, actors Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio (Cinema for Peace), and the Bouazizi family (Mohamed Bouazizi was the Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire and prompted the Tunisian Revolution).

The initiative is co-sponsored by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Germany, Mauritius, Senegal, Singapore and Uruguay.
As the ubiquitous "peace symbol" popularized in the 1960s represented a spirited, call-to-action for non-violent conflict resolution, the new logo for human rights stands as a peaceful contribution towards the global spread and implementation of human rights.
