It’s a movement with rhythm and melody! Ever dream of playing guitar with a guitar hero? Under the direction of longtime Paul Simon guitarist Mark Stewart, Guitar Mash not only creates opportunities for amateurs and professionals to play together and help people rediscover their potential to be creative, it hosts songwriting competitions, mentoring sessions, live performances and benefits youth and jazz organizations. Co-Chaired by celebrity chef Tom Colicchio, among this year’s participants include notable recording artists Joan Osborne, Martha Wainwright and Marshall Crenshaw.

The Ella Fitzgerald Mobile Piano Bar roamed the streets of Harlem celebrating the 100th anniversary of the immortal singer’s birth for the Make Music New York Festival. At each stop audience members sang their favorite Ella songs with piano accompaniment as the Mobile Bar and NYC VIBE traveled to locations that resonated with Fitzgerald’s music heritage, including the Apollo Theater and Red Rooster/Ginny’s Supper Club.

More than 2500 New Yorkers enjoyed live music and swing dancing at the 10th Great Jazz on the Great Hill, co-presented with Jazzmobile. The concert featured performances by The Jimmy Heath Big Band, The Allan Harris Band and The Matthew Whitaker Trio. NYC VIBE sat down with each of the artists to explore their New York roots and discuss the history of jazz in NYC.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York is an annual sporting and multicultural event celebrating the fifth moon (or the fifth month) of the lunar calendar. NYC VIBE met with the participants and organizers of the Festival, which offers visitors traditional Chinese foods and performances, and hosts over 120 dragon boat teams from across North America, making it one of the largest dragon boat festivals in the United States.
