NYC VIBE with the

UN Women for Peace on

International Women’s Day

August 2018 – Did you know that more than half the population of the world are women?

NYC VIBE joined the women who were honored by the UN Women for Peace Association – for their extraordinary work to empower women around the world – on International Women’s Day at the United Nations. The organization honors individuals who make a big difference in the lives of women, children and refugees around the world.

The day began at the NY Stock Exchange where members of UN Women for Peace rang the opening bell to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations.

The day continued with an awards luncheon, which was hosted by actress and activist Bridget Moynahan. Honorees included fashion model Ashley Graham who received the first ever “Women’s Empowerment Award”. Graham was cited by the UN Women for Peace as a “Leader in the positive body movement, and a powerful role model for women and girls around the world”.

Lorena Castillo De Varela – the former First Lady of Panama – received the coveted “Leadership Award” which recognized her work in the fight against HIV and discrimination in all its forms.

Nikki Haley presented Sheikha Rima with the Peace Award – describing her as “A doer, mover, shaker and a global game changer”.

Since 2008, The UN Women for Peace Association has worked tirelessly to advance the goals of academic and charitable organizations that provide social, cultural and educational opportunities for women through empowerment programs. The organization also raises funds for the UN Trust Fund to end violence against women. Proceeds from the awards luncheon will help support the UN Women for Peace School for Syrian Refugee Girls. Following the awards, a discussion panel was held on the role of media to empower women.

2018 is turning out to be the year of the woman, and here in New York City, The UN Women for Peace Association is leading the way!
