April 2014 Beijing, China: Among the Volkswagen highlights at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show include the world Premiere of the Touareg SUV.

“The Volkswagen Group is once again assuming a pioneering role in China and launching the biggest initiative for e-mobility in China’s automotive history”, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, announced at Auto China in Beijing. The initiative gets underway with the launch this year of the Volkswagen brand’s electric up! and e-Golf models.

While the Porsche Panamera S E-hybrid3is already in the showrooms in China, the Group will be launching two further innovative plug-in hybrid vehicles there next year with the Audi A3 e-tron4 and the Golf GTE5. Starting in 2016, this will be followed by two models developed specially for the Chinese market: These are the Audi A6 and a new mid-size limousine from the Volkswagen brand, both plug-in hybrids which are being developed together with the joint venture partners FAW Volkswagen and Shanghai Volkswagen and will be produced locally. Furthermore, the Bentley Hybrid Concept opens a window on the broad-ranging potential of hybrid technology.

Winterkorn went on to say. “All these vehicles are highly efficient and eco-friendly. And at the same time they offer lots of driving pleasure. That is exactly what people all over the world and here in China expect of the Volkswagen Group.

As a result, the Volkswagen Group is making its Chinese vehicle fleet ever more efficient. 17 Group models already meet the updated legal requirements set by the Chinese authorities to qualify as ‘especially energy-efficient vehicles’.

€18.2 billion will be invested up to 2018. As Winterkorn commented: “Our team of over 2,700 engineers in China and our partners are working together on pioneering technologies, and we are banking on China’s innovative power.” The company will continue on its growth trajectory. Over the coming years, more than 20,000 new skilled jobs will be created in China alone.

In addition, the Group’s dealer network will see significant growth and increase by 50 percent from the present approx. 2,400 dealerships to over 3,600 partners. More than 500,000 people will then be employed by the Volkswagen Group’s Chinese dealer organization. The success of the dealerships is based on an ever-growing range of attractive models. This year alone, the Group brands will be putting over 30 new models, successor models and product upgrades into Chinese showrooms.

Winterkorn also said that “China is the Volkswagen Group’s largest single market and plays a key role in our Strategy 2018. For 2014, we have once again set our sights on double-digit growth in China and are aiming to deliver over 3.5 million vehicles to customers for the first time in a calendar year.” According to Winterkorn, the Group is also making good overall progress across all markets: “This year, our Group is aiming to deliver over ten million vehicles to customers worldwide for the first time.” That would mean the quantitative target of Strategy 2018 would have been achieved four years earlier than planned.

China will be an integral part of the Group’s ‘Future Tracks’ initiative. As Winterkorn explained: “Here in China, as elsewhere, people’s expectations of mobility and the automobile are changing faster and faster.” Moreover, increasing digitalization is confronting the automotive industry with challenges while at the same time presenting great opportunities as well. The Volkswagen Group is addressing this and other issues of the future with its ‘Future Tracks’ initiative: “We will intensify our customer orientation even further so that we can respond even faster and more flexibly to customers’ wishes — particularly here in China.”

The best experts and masterminds in the Volkswagen Group are joining forces in the ‘Future Tracks’ initiative to find answers to the long-term trends and challenges of the automotive world. That also includes innovative vehicle-related services which will increase in popularity going forward. Winterkorn said: “That will put us in a position to take precisely the right car with the right technology to customers and the market at precisely the right time. For me, ‘Future Tracks’ contains many essential elements for continuing and evolving our Strategy 2018.”


13th New York Asian Film Festival with Jackie Chan Lifetime Achievement Award

April 2013 Shanghai, China: Among the many GM highlights at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show was the global debut of the new Buick Riviera concept at Expo Park, which offers a possible preview of Buick’s innovative future products.

Buick in China “Driving Straight Into Your Dreams: With its theme of “Driving Straight into Your Dreams” the brand’s strong presence of eighteen models and twenty vehicles demonstrates Buick’s three premium product portfolios.

They include the Riviera concept vehicle, which is making its global debut, Buick’s three premium car nameplates led by the new LaCrosse, and two vintage vehicles that highlight the glories of the Buick brand. The BIP infotainment system and Buick Care customer service brand are also being highlighted at the two-story stand.

As the latest concept vehicle based on one of GM’s global architectures, the Buick Riviera offers a possible preview of Buick’s future design with its elegant exterior and intelligent features. Developed jointly by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), the Riviera concept vehicle goes far beyond Buick’s current dynamic styling by seamlessly incorporating advanced technologies, functions and aesthetics. Based on a design concept focusing on elegance, simplicity and high efficiency, the Riviera concept vehicle resonates with future BIP Buick intelligent driving system technology through its effective IntelliDrive handling system, interactive IntelliLink infotainment system and advanced IntelliSafe proactive safety features.

The new Buick LaCrosse is offered with four variants featuring 3.0L V-6, 2.0T SIDI, 2.4L SIDI and 2.4L eAssist powertrains. They showcase Buick’s state-of-the-art intelligent solutions and new design language for premium sedans. Among the other Buick products being shown are the GL8, Regal and Excelle GT, which are Buick’s upper-medium comfort-oriented products; the Regal GS and Excelle XT, which represent Buick’s upscale coupe lineup; and the Enclave and Encore, which are Buick’s premium SUVs.

Buick Concept’s Elegant Design Inspired by the Dynamic Nature of Water: The new Riviera’s designers took inspiration from the Chinese saying: “The greatest good is like water.” The vehicle’s sweeping design, which goes from thick to thin, has the vibrant nature of a moving river embodied in its athletic shape, elegant ambience and deeply sculpted lines.

Its silhouette, which carries on Buick’s recognizable “sweep spear,” has a three-dimensional effect that is full of vigor and vitality, bringing to mind waves coming to a standstill for a split second. Buick’s unique gull-wing doors exude a dynamic and elegant ambience. The new Riviera has an ice celadon finish inspired by Han Dynasty jade to emphasize the succinct, elegant and dynamic profile of the car. The charging port is combined smartly with Buick’s iconic porthole design.

Up front, the concept vehicle’s newly designed waterfall grille is energy efficient and has a feather-like finish. Boomerang-like daytime running lights, which have a feel of azure stone, will become part of Buick’s future design DNA.

The new Riviera has a low drag coefficient and a harmonious balance between style and performance thanks to its inclined windshield, 14-degree fastback design, trimmed tailpiece and metallic fiber spoiler, which are complemented by active grille shutters, active diffusers, active spoilers.

Buick Concept Technology at a Glance: The new Riviera has adopted future BIP Buick intelligent driving system technology. It is equipped with GM’s all-new dual-mode W-PHEV (wireless plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) propulsion system. The user can drive the car on green power in electric mode and enjoy the exhilarating handling and dynamics typical of a sports car in hybrid mode. In addition, the vehicle can be charged fast or slow with a traditional cable or wirelessly via a sensory recharge panel fitted on the car’s chassis.

The new Riviera is also equipped with intelligent four-wheel steering, an electromagnetic-controlled suspension and an air spring package for sure handling and comfort in extreme conditions.



 

Dramatic Journey for 110 Years
2012 Cadillac Design and Art Show Begins in Beijing

The Dramatic Journey for 110 Years — 2012 Cadillac Design and Art Show began this weekend in Beijing at the China National Convention Center.

Attendees at the weekend opening ceremony included Edward Welburn, GM Vice President of Global Design; Ye Yongming, President of Shanghai GM; Joseph Liu, Executive Vice President of Shanghai GM; Xiao Xiaolan, one of China’s leading exhibition planners; and famous artist Zhan Wang.

On display are American and Chinese contemporary artworks along with nine classic Cadillac production and concept vehicles that interpret the humanism of different time periods and the evolution of Cadillac styling and technology over the past century.

Xiao’s prelude and artist Zhan Wang’s artwork “Fake Mountain Stone, No. 120” greet visitors. The Model M, the first Cadillac produced using standard parts, represents a starting point of the exhibition, which has four zones: Origin, Evolution, Prominence and Outlook.

 



 

Andy Garcia, Minka Kelly, Adrien Brody, Michael Phelps, & Ryan Reynolds Highlight Pro-Am in China

Haikou, China: Lights, camera, tee off!

The stars were out in central China for the 2012 World Celebrity Pro-Am at Mission Hills golf course in Haikou, China. Actors Minka Kelly, Ryan Reynolds, Adrien Brody, Andy Garcia, and Olympian Michael Phelps — who was back in the country where he won his record eight Gold medals — highlighted the bi-annual event that was won this year by Andy Garcia and PGA Tour golfer Matt Kuchar.

The Oscar-nominated star and Kuchar finished with a combined winning Stableford score of 92 over 36 holes to take top honors. Chinese pop star Sun Nan and Greek professional Liebelei Lawrence finished close runners up with a total of 91 points and celebrated Chinese movie director, He Ping and Rich Beem finished third with 89 points.

Also in attendance was one of China’s most prominent athletes, retired NBA star Yao Ming, whose foundation, along with UNICEF, were the beneficiaries of the charitable efforts of the World Celebrity Pro-Am. The tournament is set to return to Mission Hills in 2014.

Kuchar’s second round 66 earned him a total of 84 points and subsequently wrapped up victory in the professional individual competition, while renowned Chinese actor, Wang Zhiwen, took home the celebrity individual shooting thirteen strokes under his handicap to amass an 85 point total.

Shanghai General Motors Hosts Chevrolet Gala Night
to Open the 2012 Beijing Auto Show

Shanghai General Motors played host on Sunday night for the Chevrolet Gala Night on the eve of Auto China 2012, this year’s leading automotive exhibition in China, in Beijing.

Under the theme of “Passion, Youth and Heritage,” GM’s joint venture unveiled to the world the Chevrolet Malibu 1.6T passenger car, showed off for the first time in China a trio of Chevrolet concept vehicles and introduced its 2 millionth Chevrolet customer, the buyer of a Chevrolet Malibu.

Among the attendees at the event was GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson, who discussed Chevrolet’s commitment to developing vehicles to appeal to younger buyers around the world and announced that the brand sold 1.18 million vehicles worldwide in the first three months of 2012, a 6.5 percent increase over the first quarter of 2011 and the sixth consecutive quarter of record-breaking sales for the brand.

Three new-generation Chevrolet concept vehicles — the Miray, Code 130R and Tru 140S — reflect the brand’s goal of exploring new vehicle design and engineering development trends, and gaining a better understanding of what young consumers around the globe want.

Shanghai GM is displaying its full lineup of Chevrolet products at Auto China 2012. It will have 13 production and concept vehicles from 10 models on its stand. Throughout the show, Chevrolet will be surveying younger local consumers. Their suggestions on the design and functionality of passenger cars will be incorporated in the development of future vehicles.

As the population of the world migrates from rural and suburban areas to cities, the pathway to sustainable urban mobility begins now… in Shanghai.

At the World Expo Shanghai, GM is hosting a crucial series of conferences: the “Drive to 2030” Sustainable Urban Mobility Series – which clearly defines the challenges and solutions for future urban transportation and aims to develop a “road map” for sustainable mobility. In the year 2030, it is estimated that 60 percent of the world’s population will live in cities.

Six forums will be held over the next six months at the SAIC-GM Pavilion at Expo 2010. Each of the forums will include a distinguished lineup of speakers and panelists from China and around the world. Participants will include academics, members of the business community, government officials and representatives of non-profit organizations. The first forum was the “The Pathway to Sustainable Mobility” wherein a select panel reviewed the issues and challenges facing society on the path toward sustainable urban mobility.

“MAKE IT MATTER” ASIAN TOUR

Following an impressive Masters performance tying for fourth place, Tiger Woods jetted all night from Augusta, GA to Shenzhen, China on Monday night.
On Wednesday, Tiger visited the Olympic Stadium Bird’s Nest and to do a photo shoot with Olympic Hurdler Liu Xiang – the first time Tiger visited the capital city.

With golf added to Olympic competition schedule fir the 2016 Rio Games, Tiger is excited and is looking forward to making the team.

The Nike Golf “Make it Matter” Tour featured Nike athletes Tiger Woods and Olympic Hurdler Liu Xiang- visiting students at Beijing Sports University. Both iconic Nike athletes talked about their respective sports, how important training is and how to become best they can be. Because of hundreds and hundreds of students clamoring to get a “view” of Tiger and Liu in person, it was challenging getting them into the building to address more students inside. The two athletes, who met for the first time, formed a new friendship.

Tiger’s Tour launched in China beginning in Shenzhen (Tuesday, April 12), then on to Beijing (Wednesday, April 13) and Seoul, Korea (Thursday, April 14).

THE WORLD OF MERCEDES-BENZ AT AUTO SHOW CHINA 2010

April 2010—Beijing:

Among the many Mercedes-Benz highlights at Auto China 2010 were the world premiers of the Concept Shooting Break, the E-Class L and the Maybach “Facelift, the local premiers of the E-Class Convertible, the SLS AMG, the C-Class Estate, and F 800 Style Show Car.

Mercedes-Benz and Maybach are leading the luxury segment of the automotive market in every respect – from super sports cars to limousines. Mercedes-Benz is the most successful luxury brand in China.

The suprise star at the Mercedes-Benz press conference was Leona Lewis, the glamourous English pop and R&B singer-songwriter, who was driven onto thre stage in a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible. Other highlights of the presentation were the appearance of former Formula 1 Champion Mikka Hakkinen introducing the SLS AMG and a performance of the two famous Chinese musicians, Yu Quiang and Siqing Lu.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Boom in China

The E-Class segment is currently enjoying a boom in China: a total of around 122,000 vehicles from this class were sold there in 2008, but according to experts this figure is already expected to exceed 200,000 in 2010. Long versions dominate the segment with a share of close to 90 percent. Customers are primarily entrepreneurs and the self-employed, many of whom use the services of a chauffeur.

Produced in Germany, the new E-Class Saloon (W 212) has already sold more than 12,000 units in the People’s Republic of China since the middle of 2009.
