Undergrads Go The Eco Distance! LAVAL UNIVERSITY WINS SHELL MILEAGE CHALLENGE FUEL EFFICIENT ENTRY ACHIEVES 2487 MPG! With a vehicle that achieved an amazing 2487 miles per gallon, students from Laval University, Quebec, won the 2010 Shell Eco-marathon Americas. The competition, hosted by the Shell Oil Company, challenges undergrad and high school teams, comprised of the brightest engineering students to design a vehicle which travels the farthest distance utilizing the least amount of fuel. Nearly 50 teams from across North America and as far away as Italy faced-off over the weekend at Houston’s Discovery Green urban park.   It’s the first time the competition has been staged on city streets in Shell’s hometown and the first time that members of the public were invited to view the event, which was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Shell Oil executives presented prizes to the student teams, at a dinner and ceremony this evening.  Other awards were given to vehicles in various fuel categories, including diesel, solar and hydrogen power.  Prizes were also given out for design, technical innovation, eco design and best team spirit. The Shell Eco-marathon Americas is an educational platform that encourages innovation, reinforces conservation, and fosters the development of leading technology for greater energy efficiency.
