Laureus World Sports Awards
On the eve of the fourth annual Laureus World Sports Awards, all eyes were on the celebrity arrivals prior to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Dinner and Charity Auction at the Monte Carlo Sporting Club. The guest list included famous sporting personalities – past and present - and sporting enthusiasts from the world of entertainment. On hand were HSH Prince Albert of Monaco, Edwin Moses, Boris Becker, Michael Johnson, Katarina Witt, Gary Player, Rod Stewart, Alberto Tomba, Martina Navratilova, Michael Johnson, John McEnroe, Venus & Serena Williams, Dawn Fraser, Rachel Hunter and David Hasselhoff. The Laureus World Sports Award is designed to recognise sporting excellence across the globe. It is held every year to recognize the world's best sportsmen and women for their achievements across all disciplines throughout the world. Awards will be made in a range of categories, with the ultimate honour being World Sportsman and World Sportswoman of the Year. The Laureus World Sports Awards also celebrates the role that sport itself can play in promoting international goodwill. The Laureus World Sports Academy is a group of 41 legendary athletes chaired by Edwin Moses who devote their time to using sport for social change in global projects funded and promoted by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The highlight of the evening was the charity auction - a six-month worldwide campaign titled, “Bid for Good”. “Bid for Good” features the auction of the spectacular Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, which has yet to be made available to the public. The silent “Bid for Good” auction will be carried out by Christie’s with the winning bid announced in New York in December. As of now, more than €1 million is being offered. |
